STICU celebrates status of two-time Beacon Award recipient
VCU Medical Center’s Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit was awarded a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, continuing our impressive streak of the most active Beacon Awards in the nation with a total of 13.
Receiving a Beacon Award for Excellence is a significant milestone for our organization, team members, patients and families. The award recognizes individual units within a hospital that show exemplary practice in providing the best care for patients and families every day.
For our nurses, a Beacon means a positive, supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders, higher morale and lower turnover. For our patients, it means better care, better outcomes and greater overall satisfaction.
Lisa Riggs, president of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, traveled from Kansas City, Missouri, to attend the celebration with the STICU team and its leadership.
“VCU Medical Center has the most Beacon Awards in the nation,” said Riggs. “When I heard that VCU was receiving yet another Beacon Award today, I wanted to be in attendance because nurses make a huge difference in patient care and I wanted to acknowledge that, not only from myself but from the entire AACN.”
The STICU received its first Beacon Award in 2008 and was the first intensive care unit in the Richmond area to do so. The Beacon reviewers observed that this unit showed clear evidence of learning cycles, staff development and sharing that learning with others. They also noted that the STICU approaches or exceeds the benchmarks in most areas reviewed. Two best practices highlighted were the internal transfer process and the Watson Room, a quiet, private room where team members can go to decompress and relieve stress.
“On a regular basis, you make miracles happen,” said Deb Zimmerman, D.N.P., chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services for VCU Health. “You are an incredible team. You provide consistent patient care that promotes our mission of restoring and preserving health for all people. Thank you for all that you do every day.”
Congratulations to the STICU team and all of our Beacon units at VCU Medical Center.
